Nita Shah, founder of PR consultancy Shahrp talks to Engage ….
PR agency in the City and worked on IPOs( Initial Public Offerings), M & A transactions and ongoing corporate PR work for clients. She then joined the in – house department of a global investment management company as Corporate Affairs & Media Manager.
“ My achievements here were recognised by global department heads, with whom I worked closely on various projects. I knew I was doing good things but felt I wanted to do it for myself, hence setting up Shahrp, a freelance PR consultancy based in Barnet, Hertfordshire in January 2004. I love my work and am challenged by the variety and meeting client needs,” she said.
Shahrp’ s recent and existing clients span a variety of sectors including financial services, recruitment and property. Shahrp also helps organisations wanting to communicate with ethnic minority groups and clients in this arena include The Asian Wedding Exhibition 2006, Dynamic Asian Women’ s Network( DAWN) and Executive Reach Conferences.
Shahrp is an unusual name and Nita explains where it came from,“ I made up the word, which derives from my surname, Shah. I wanted a company name that was one word and personal to me. Also, Shahrp( pronounced sharp) fits well with what the company aims to do – public relations giving clients the edge.”
Sharing advice with Engage readers, Nita said,“ I’ m happy to help others where I can. Sometimes that may be sharing advice or information, or opening the black book and connecting people with other individuals or organizations. My message is to encouraging asking! Whether it is a question or help needed, if you don’ t ask, you don’ t get. Also, try doing new things and venturing out of your comfort zone – these are invaluable learning experiences – setting up Shahrp has been the biggest learning opportunity for me. Finally, everyone makes mistakes; the crucial thing is to learn from them.”
Nita cites the results focused approach and passion as some of the factors that differentiate Shahrp.“ One of my strengths is being ferociously proactive and making things happen as I am keen to see results – not just for clients, but also for myself as I put a huge amount of effort into working on their behalf. I am also very passionate about what I do. That, combined with a desire to achieve results is a good combination and often why clients come back to Shahrp for repeat projects or ongoing work.

“ This is a fantastic accolade and I am absolutely thrilled. The PR profession has predominantly been a white, middle – class one, however that is changing and as one of the few Indian women working in PR, I am pleased to be a part of that.
