Disability Facts

There are a growing number of people with disabilities in the UK and they are still disadvantaged when it comes to their involvement in the workplace and as business-owners Engage looks at some facts:
Generally
n There are approximately 10 million disabled adults in the UK which represents around 18 % of the UK population:

n 19 % of the working age population in the UK are disabled women

n 51 % of disabled women in the UK are economically inactive.

n According to Michael Paciello in his book‘ Web accessibility for People with Disabilities’, there are approximately: n Non – Disabled People( 48.2 million) n Disabled People( 10.6 million)
n In 2005, there were over 6.8 million disabled people who were of working age representing 19 % of the working population.( Source: Labour Force Survey, June 2005)
n There has been an increase in the number of working age people reporting a disability from 6.2 million in Spring 1998 to just under 7 million in Spring 2005.

n Businesses with a majority of disabled owners or partners comprise only 0.5 % of the business stock in London.
