Eagle Edition Enrico Fermi High School/Enfield High School Community Newsletter January, 2016 Quarter 2 FOR Member Report by Jocelyn Mazur Rachel’s Challenge Day of Kindness December 19th, 2014 The Rachel’s Challenge clubs of Enfield High School, Fermi High School and JFK Middle School collaborated to carry out a “Town-wide Day of Kindness”. On Saturday, December 19, students and staff from the three schools performed acts of kindness for the residents of Enfield. On Saturday, the three schools worked together to put on a Free Pancake Breakfast for al l town residents. The breakfast took place at St. Patrick’s Church from 8-10 a.m. The breakfast also served as a collection site for non-perishable food items to support the Enfield Food Shelf and Enfield Loaves and Fishes. Rachel’s Challenge is a program designed to equip schools to create and sustain a safe, caring, and supporting learning environment. The program, Friends of Rachel (FOR) is named in memory of Rachel Scott Joy, victim of the 1999 Columbine shooting, and her commitment to paying kindness forward. FHS & EHS Student Leadership Day On 1-11-2016, 32 girls from Fermi and Enfield High School, traveled to Quinnipiac University to attend the CT Student Leadership Conference for Young Women of Color, sponsored by the Connecticut Association f Schools (CAS). Over 100 females from across the state were inspired by a keynote address by Janice Castle, a senior consultant at Travelers. The girls danced together and participated in breakout session focused on identifying their leadership qualities, college admissions, and college life. They chanted, “My voice has power to change!” continued p. 9 The pancake breakfast was such an incredible experience! The atmosphere was so positive, and it was endless thanks to the FHS, EHS, and JFK Friend’s of Rachel (FOR) club members. From the endless amount of pancakes to the arts and crafts tables filled with little kids, there was never a dull moment. Everywhere I turned there were families and friends smiling and laughing. Not only was the pancake breakfast for a good cause, it also brought townsfolk together. One of the best parts of the event was the raffle. Thanks go out to staff members and teachers, who helped to fill six tables with baskets of food, gift cards, and more, that were raffled off. The proceeds were donated to The Little Sisters of the Poor, Enfield Loaves & Fishes, and the Enfield Food Shelf. This event was wonderful! Thanks to all who came out to make it so special. The band played Christmas tunes and children were able to visit with Santa and his helper Buddy! The pancake breakfast was truly one of the best times I had in volunteer-
