TIMELINE OF KNIGHT AND LEE

The map below shows the arrangement of shops located in Palmerston road in the 19th century when the John Lewis premises operated out of 10 stores while the new store on Palmerston road was being built.

have also included a timeline of the history of the building below. The site I am working on for this project was built in 1959 purposely made for a retail function.

Store originally a lace business was a lace business ran by William Wink on Queen’ s street
1857
Knight and Lee purchased a fishmongers on the corner of Stanley Lane and Palmerston road. This was joined by further premises to create the building.

Store was aquired by John Lewis
1933
Store expanded into further premises next to Palmerston arcade and Elm Grove
New building opened

ThAT Group announce plans of multi million pound refurshbishment to create a co-working space, roof top bar, cinema and event spaces

Frederick Winkmoved the buisiness to more fashionale Palmerston Road in Southsea

Brother in laws Jesse Knight and Edward Herbert Soden Lee purchased the business. The business expanded to include a boywear and menswear department.
1922 1955
Knight passed away in 1922 and Lee 2 years later. Mr Brown from that point ran the business.
1940
Store was destroyed by a air raid. The store was then reopened but then destroyed by a bomb in 1941.
Announced a new purpose built building to be built on Palmerston Road

Free hold of the building was sold by John Lewis to THAT Group
