SUMMER 22
Greases that use non-soap thickeners include clay and silica-based products , which produce non-melting greases , and polyurea-thickened greases . Polyurea greases are very stable and have a thickening structure similar to soap . They boast a high dropping point and provide outstanding service life , especially in high-speed bearing applications .
Over-based calcium sulfonate greases have unique properties and produce a truly all-purpose product . The life of this product is two or three times that of regular grease , and its resistance to water in wet environments is unsurpassed !
Other performance-enhancing additives such as extreme-pressure agents or solid ingredients such as graphite or molybdenum disulfide are sometimes added to greases for special applications . Color , on the other hand , is considered a “ marketing ” characteristic and has little to do with lubrication .
Compatibility of grease thickeners , or the lack of it , is one of the biggest reasons for grease failure . As a general rule , it is best to avoid mixing different thickeners . Refer to the chart on FSSystem . com , which identifies greases that are and are not considered compatible with each other .
When changing from one type or brand of grease to another , it is a best practice to monitor the application closely for a time to make certain there are no compatibility issues .
Unlike the grease Travolta put in his hair , the grease we ’ re talking about isn ’ t a simple matter of trends or taste . Your local FS Energy Specialist can help you determine the right grease for your application .
