Governance: The norms by which
a government operates, measured
in terms such as transparency,
accountability, rule of law and
strength of institutions.
Great Depression: A severe
worldwide economic depression
that lasted through the 1930s. It
started in the United States and was
precipitated by the stock market
crash on October 29, 1929. The
Great Depression finally ended in
the United States with the massive
increase in government spending
for World War II.
Great Recession: The worst
economic downturn in the United
States since the Great Depression. It
started in December 2007 with the
bursting of a housing bubble that
led to a financial crisis and a steep
rise in unemployment. The severity
of the downturn in the United States
spread to other countries leading to
a global recession.
Greenhouse gas emissions: Gases
that trap heat in the atmosphere and
are linked to global climate change.

Gross domestic product (GDP):
The value of all goods and services
produced within a nation during a
specified period, usually a year.
Group of 8 (G-8): The wealthiest
industrial countries: Canada, France,
Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia,
United Kingdom and United States.
