THE DEPT. OF NURSING MANAGEMENT OF THE
HANNOVER MEDICAL SCHOOL (MHH) RESPONDS
TO THE COMPLEX NEEDS OF ONCOLOGICAL
PATIENTS!
During the course of their illness many patients and their family members can
come up against their limits psychologically, emotionally and organizationally.
Many patients are insecure about the vast amount of available information and
can hardly evaluate its quality. However, it is important for them to understand
their treatment. In 2016 the Dept. of Nursing management in the MHH successfully
implied the concept of an oncological-care consultation service (OPK). It consists
of three qualifies staff members for oncological care, consulting patients which
don't have professionally trained staff in this field. The OPK offers advice to
symptoms, which can come with the oncological illness and the treatment thereof.
Aside of the symptom control, the OPK assures that patients and their family
members gain a better understanding of their illnesses and prognosis. As the
primary nursing responsibility lies with each of the wards teams, it is possible to
share the oncological knowledge with many colleagues through a multiplier effect.
This contains, beside an effective symptom control, the instruments of specific
techniques and attitude, ie. in the communication and orientation of the quality
of life of the patient. During 09/16 – 03/17, 106 oncological patients at the MHH
received oncological-care consultation. A consultation lasted ca. 41 minutes.
Besides topics such as care of skin- and mucous membranes and easing of
symptoms (ie. nausea, vomiting, pruritus, lack of appetite and loss of weight, pain)
the psychosocial support was the focus with regards of the fears and worries of
the patients and their family members.
