WHO ARE REALY NURSE TODAY IN CROATIA?
Nursing in Croatia has a long tradition since 1921 by establishing the first school
for nurse assistant in Zagreb. In that time the education lasted two to three years,
after completing the gymnasium. Over the past ten years, nurses have reached
university education, on a rather trivial road. The multitude of challenges that
appeared in front of the nurses enthusiasts were different, but the question to
nursing students deserves special attention: "Why do nurses need the university
level education?" When the Republic of Croatia applied for EU membership, the
"Famous Directive" appeared, which gave a certain group of nurses hope that
nursing will be aligned with the EU's nursing requirements, but nursing education
was not harmonized with the directive. We „harmonized the Directive with
ourselves. Today in the Republic of Croatia there are different levels of nursing
education with certain fictitious competencies. In practice, they are all licensed
nurses: those who have completed five years of education, those who have
completed Baccalaureate degree, those who have completed graduate studies or
at a university or polytechnic. All of these are nurses whose daily hospital work
and obligations are intertwined in hospital settings, regardless of the competence
and the price of work (salary). Nurses with a graduate degree also work in high
schools and colleges, but in most cases they do not have adecquate financial
compensation. Taking into account all levels of secondary school education (5
years or 3 years, to be more precise), Bachelors, graduate nurses or nurses with
master degree?
