RESPECT OF MEDICAL CONFIDENTIALITY TO THE
HOME CARE ACCORDING TO HIPPOCRATES; OATH
Introduction: While home care is a unique care provider, it presents many moral
problems, such as keeping the patient's privacy, which the nurses need to know
for their successful treatment. Aim: The purpose of this retrospective study is to
highlight some important information about keeping thepatient's privacy in home
care according to Hippocrates' oath. Review Methods: Extensive review of the
recent literature was conducted in electronic database, Medline and via the link of
the Greek Association of Academic Libraries (HEAL-Link), using the following key
words: home care, medical confidentiality,Hippocrates' oath. Results: A home care
nurse should provide services based on his competence. He must respect the
dignity and privacy of his patients and the patient's home. .According to
Hippocrates' oath, into whatsoever houses he enters, he will enter to help the sick,
and he will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm, especially from
abusing the bodies of man or woman, bond or free. And whatsoever he shall see
or hear in the course of his profession, as well as outside his profession in his
intercourse with men, if it be what should not be published abroad, he will never
divulge, holding such things to be holy secrets. Conclusions: In home care, nurses
are not only confined to the therapeutic rehabilitation of the patient, but are
designed to maintain and promote the moral health of the patients.
