To understand how surface integrity is affected by high speed machining
(HSM), an investigation on surface finish and residual stresses induced by HSM
of an AA7075-T651 alloy is performed. Orthogonal cutting was adopted in the
experiments since it can provide basic information about the inherent capability
of the work material to produce an enhanced/poor surface finish. It was found
that the shear plane length and friction angle seem to be key parameters
controlling the mechanical state of the machined surface in terms of residual
stress distribution. Besides, by controlling the cutting speed and feed, it is possible
to generate high compressive surface stresses, deeper compressive depth and
good surface finish using dry HSM.
