Blackstone River Theatre’ s Twenty-Fifth Anniversary
In Cumberland, a small cultural arts center is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary of programming. Volunteers renovated an abandoned Masonic building for four years before opening in September 2000. In addition to ongoing music and dance classes, Blackstone River Theatre presents fifty concerts annually, specializing in Celtic, Americana, traditional and world music. The intimate theater is known for its excellent sound with the focus always on the performer. Folk arts, handed down from one generation to the next, are a powerful vehicle for conveying a community’ s legacy. Giving a space for this is core to the mission of Blackstone River Theatre.

Machinal: A Dance of Defiance In a world that demands silence, she moves. Sophie Treadwell’ s searing 1928 play, a landmark of American expressionism, is reborn in this striking new ballet. Through stylized choreography and haunting rhythms, this adaptation strips away dialogue to reveal the raw, physical truth of one woman’ s rebellion. In collaboration with University of Rhode Island and co-adaptor Rachel Walshe, Yury Yanowsky breathes new life into this theatrical masterwork.
