THE ARCHITECT
Completing his Masters of Architecture degree at the University of Utah in 1991, Michael Upwall went on
that same year to found Upwall Design Architects. A Utah native, he has a critical understanding of the area’s
unique topography, climate and geography and has a knack for creating sustainable living spaces. Michael’s
design philosophy is centered around the belief that a home should literally “grow” out of the earth; a natural
extension of the landscape. He believes that a home should be an organic entity, truly timeless in nature,
and should present itself as if it has always been there. This nature friendly philosophy has its roots in the
