If you know me , you know how much I love my torch ! I love that “ swoosh ” sound that comes when I pull the trigger and the propane catches fire ! The truth is , I love every aspect of working with encaustic medium from watching it melt on my hotplate to fusing the last layer on my substrate . I love its alchemy ; the way this blend of beeswax and tree sap transforms from solid to liquid to solid again . I love that while important technical aspects to ensure the integrity of its use must be respected , no two encaustic artists create with it in exactly the same way . I love its organic composition , and remind myself every day that working with this medium is a privilege ! This cherished resource is completely dependant on the care and preservation of our precious honey bee population . I don ’ t take that lightly .
I was first introduced to this medium when I walked into an artist ’ s booth at a local art show , and was fascinated by the interesting appearance and texture of her pieces . My curiosity led me to seek out workshops with well known encaustic artists who worked with a focus on archival integrity and safety . I fell in love with every aspect of working with this medium , and through the application of learned techniques and experimentation , eventually I found my own voice .
