In 1989, industrial fishing reached its climax at 90 million tons of fish harvested12. Since then, however, annual fishing tonnage has been steadily going down, and rare and valuable catches like Blue Fin Tuna have gone done to critically endangered levels.
In 2003 a study came out which reported that the oceans had been overfished to 10% of their previous population12. Fishing conglomerates then went to new lengths in order to fill their quotas, fishing deeper and deeper into the ocean with even greater consequences to the health of the ocean ecosystem. Scientists estimate that at the current rate the oceans are being fished, by 2048 all fisheries will have been fished past recoverable levels12.
