who is at fault?

85% of fisheries are over fished

Today in the THE US SEAFOOD DEMAND IS UP BY 70% MORE THAN IT WAS IN 1970. WITH MORE PEOPLE AND MORE TRYING TO EAT A HEALTHY DIET IT HAS LEAD TO OVERFISHING AND HAS TURNED FISHING INTO A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS. BEFORE, FISHING WAS MORE SUSTAINABLE

BUT WITH TODAY'S TECHNOLOGY FISHERMAN ARE ABLE TO CATCH MORE FISH THAN EVER BEFORE. TO KEEP UP WITH THE DEMANDS OF THE PUBLIC. TODAY'S VESSELS AND NETS ARE BIGGER THAN EVER BEFORE. BYCATCH IS A FACTOR IN OVER FISHING WHERE FISH AND ENDANGERED SPECIES GET CAUGHT IN THE NETS OF THE BOATS. This hurts the ecoystem. ANOTHER REASON FOR OVERFISHING IS ILLEGAL FISHING THAT IS UNREGULATED , IT IS ESTimated THAT ILLEGAL FISHING MAKES UP ABOUT 20% OF THE EARTH'S CATCHES

SO WHO IS AT FAULT FOR ALL THE OVERFISHING GOING ON? THE LACK OF MANAGEMENT AND THE LACK OF GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS HAS BEEN A HUGE PROBLEM. THE GOVERNMENT CONTINUES TO SUBSIDES FLEETS WHICH ALLOWS OVERFISHING TO OCCUR. ONLY 1.6% OF THE EARTH'S OCEAN IS CONSIDERED MARINE PROTECTED. MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE BY THE GOVERNMENT IF WE WANT OUR OCEANS AND FISHERIES TO GET BACK TO NORMAL.
