FOOD INSECURITY

Many people who live in coastal areas depend on fish as their main source of protein. Most of these communities are developing countries, so they are especially hurt by illegal fishing. With fish gone, these coastal communties will have to turn elsewhere to get their protein.

LOSS OF JOBS

As long as there is a demand for fish, someone will need to supply it. However, fishing in this unsustainable way will eventually use up all of the ocean's resources and put hundreds of millions of people out of a job.

NO MORE SEA SWIMS

With no larger predators to eat all of the smaller, more harmful creatures like sea jellies, the ocean would become unsafe to swim in. This is because sea turtles would get captured and killed by fishing nets, and sea jellies would become much more populous with no swordfish, tuna, or sharks to eat them.
