don’t have time!! Ugh, I despise hearing that because those same folks are quick to hang out with friends, spend countless hours on the computer or watching TV. “

The sacrifice and investment of time is a drop in the bucket compared to the return one will see if they take the time for self-care and self-maintenance. Self-care includes facials, massages, manicures and pedicures or something of the like. Self-maintenance includes working out, knowing your numbers (pulse, blood pressure, respirations, tolerance for stress) and keeping your numbers normal. Having annual physicals and listening to your body and spirit to ensure optimal health is also self-maintenance. As women of color we tend to put everybody before ourselves. Danielle King can relate. As a business owner, a wife, and a mother she has the same struggles as everybody else. Danielle stated “As Black women we are definitely in the danger zone when it comes to these types of disease processes (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer). It saddens me because these diseases are, in most cases directly related to lack of caring for one’s body (self-maintenance). I say we need to educate ourselves and reinforce the importance of good health. Many of us will neglect our health for the sake of money, clothes, shoes or a purse. For example, another constant excuse is the inability to afford proper training or nutrition. Personally, I’d rather skip the hair and nail salon to live a healthier lifestyle. Why wait until you are stricken with a disease!! Let’s be proactive!”
