iguria is a splendid strip of land squeezed between the sea and
the mountains, coloured by a rich vegetation and made magic by
panoramas and naturalistic itineraries that are not to be missed.
Liguria is famous above all for its evocative coastline, divided in
two rivieras, each very different from the other for their aspect and
scenery. The Riviera di Ponente (western riviera) is characterized by gentle
spreading hillsides with the mountains generally far from the shore and lar-
ge valleys sloping down to little plains.
The Riviera di Levante (eastern riviera), on the other hand, has high ground
descending sharply to the sea, with jagged promontories covered in mariti-
me pines and edged by picturesque cliffs.
These two areas meet in Genoa, the regional capital and still today the most
important port in Italy as well as one of the largest in the Mediterranean. The
beautiful historical city centre, together with those unique and melancho-
lically beautiful places that are the Cinque Terre, constitute a national pride
and attract tourists from all over the world.
