nates long, sandy beaches, such as those of Ver-
silia, with rocky cliffs and steep promontories.
Mediterranean vegetation and crystal clear sea
are the characteristics of this part of Tuscany, a wonderful
region in all its aspects and rich in differing landscapes. The
Argentario offers rugged coastlines and unspoilt nature,
flourishing reefs in suggestive blue seabeds.
Beautiful Versilia offers long sandy beaches, social life and
nightclubs. There are numerous excursions possible, espe-
cially by bicycle, a widely-used means of transport and the
best way to visit the beautiful countryside of the Marem-
ma. No less particular and fascinating are the towns of Li-
vorno and Grosseto with their good cuisine and typical lo-
cal dishes, like the famous Cacciucco (a local fish stew) or
stockfish Livorno-style. Among the annual events we must
mention the famous and colourful Carnival of Viareggio,
known worldwide for its colossal allegorical floats made of
papier-mâché.
