Plastics Segment Highlights
6th in Europe The use of plastics in Poland remained broadly unchanged in 2012 - at around 2.65mn tons, or around 5.8% of the European Union's total. PlasticsEurope Polska estimates that this result places Poland on the sixth spot in Europe (after Germany, Italy, France, Spain and the UK). Enterprises The plastics industry in Poland comprises over 74 thousand enterprises with over 133 thousand employees. The majority of them are small and medium-size enterprises employing up to several dozen people. The sector’s output in 2012 was over 2.3mn tons.
Customers In 2012, the main recipients of Polish plastics were the packaging and construction industries. Each of these industries received 32% of the total output. Thus, the sector is vulnerable to macroeconomic conditions, and was hurt both by more modest domestic demand (packaging) and the crisis in the construction industry. Prospects Even though the crisis in the euro zone weighs heavily on the Polish plastics industry, its prospects are not that gloomy as Poland still has large growth potential compared to its Western European peers: plastics use per inhabitant is around 65 kg vs. the EU average of around 90 kg and compared to around 130kg per inhabitant for the richest countries.
