Global chemical turnover rose by 11.6% y/y to EUR 2,744bn in 2011. The sector's recovery in 2010-2011 was mainly due to growth in emerging economies. The European chemical industry posted sales of EUR 642bn in 2011, or 23.4% of the global figure (the European Union alone contributed 19.6% of the total). Developments from 2001 to 2011 indicate that the European Union was the overall leader in terms of world chemicals sales, but it has gradually lost ground to China and Asia (excluding Japan).
