At Christmas, Carnival or at the end of the academic year we also use the Assembly hall to make our shows: we play
instruments, sing, recite or perform a play. Last year, we performed Grease and it was a success. Now we are rehearsing A
Christmas Carol by Dickens for the Christmas party. You are all invited to come!!!
WE ARE INVOLVED STUDENTS AT IES MESA Y LÓPEZ
At IES Mesa y López we are very involved in some questions that are really important in society nowadays. For that
reason, some students and teachers work in different projects: The Human Rights Committee (HRC), the Equality
Commission (EC) or The Supportive Route among others.
The Human Right Committee and The Equality Commission
These are two voluntary groups at the high school, which work in a coordinated way, with the aim of creating a new
commitment and philosophy of life in a society where there is not so much justice and so much inequality of opportunities.
The HRC belongs to a network of solidarity schools working for the peace and the human rights. The students and the
teachers of Philosophy meet every week and organize acts such as the March for Peace, the celebration of The Human Rights
Day or meetings at the end of course to discuss about different topics.
The Commission of Equality also meets every week and participates in join events with other schools in cooperative
acts. In addition, every Thursday, sexual information and advice are given in meetings at break time to solve doubts among
the students.
But the most important purpose for both groups is to transform the life of the centre by means of different and diverse
acts, promoting respectful in our relationships and the interest for the social commitment. Carlos Cabrera (4ºA) who is one of
our partners who belong to the Human Rights Committee can tell us something more about it.
‘Carlos, what do you do in the Committee? – Well, we meet every week to talk about different topics, that is about
poverty, hunger, racism, environment or violence. And we also organize some workshops to invite the rest of students to
participate’.
‘What do you learn there?’- ‘We learn a lot. We usually have discussions about problems that appear in the newspapers
or others that we see around us. For example,
the global warming, the refugees’ situation or
differences that there are still because of our
sex gender’
‘What is the thing you like doing the
most in there? Apart of learning a lot, I love
organizing workshops or exhibitions. This year,
at break time, we read a manifesto the
International Day for the elimination of
violence against women, November 25. Last
year, we took part of the flashmob dancing
“Abre tus ojos” (“Open your eyes”) and the
students from the rest of the groups joined us at
the
playground.
It
was
really
funny.
Sometimes, we also meet other schools and
share experiences.
‘What are you doing now, are you
preparing something special for Christmas?’‘Yes, we are organizing a campaign for the
responsible consumption. We are having a
