GRADING SYSTEM IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC AND OUR SCHOOL ( GYMNÁZIUM DĚČÍN )
In the Czech Republic , all schools use a five-mark grading scale , 1 being the best and 5 the worst grade . The school year is divided into two terms and at the end of each term , on 31 January and 30 June pupils and students at primary and secondary schools get a school report card . The school report card lists all subjects and the final grades . In primary schools , the grades are usually written as numbers , in secondary schools in words .
Here is a fictional example of a Czech school report . Výborný means 1 , chvalitebný 2 , so Petr Novák is an excellent student � . In our school it is not common for a student to achieve all ones , because the standards are very high .
If there is a 5 on your school report at the end of the school year , you must spend your summer studying and take an exam before a panel of teachers to prove that you have caught up with the standards . This is what
students want to avoid so it happens rarely .
Generally , Czechs like to complain about things and the marking system is not an exception . The main problem is that five grades are not enough . Teachers often end up with 1- , 2- etc ., which is not possible in official documents like the report card .
During each term , students are given grades for tests , oral examinations , presentations or homework . Most schools , including ours , use an electronic tool for recording grades during the term , which is great for teachers and students ( parents as well ). Each grade is given a value from 1 to 10 . The more important the test , the greater the value . Here is an example of a teacher ’ s records . On the right , you can see the average score so far . Students can check their scores any time in their computers or mobile phones . Some schools and teachers use alternative ways of grading students , such as percentages from 0 to 100 . However , in the end the final grade on the school report card must be 1 to 5 .
