Greater levels of self-confidence and intrapersonal skill set a proactive tone to coping with stressors and high levels of emotional challenge. Self-management enhances control, discipline and the ability to adapt. These also expand positive emotions, optimism and an overall hardiness.

Relationally, emotional intelligence expands empathy and interpersonal skills. Social awareness and communication skills promote the abilities of acknowledging and dealing with harsh situations. Relationship management creates a greater scope and breadth in social abilities and dealing with people.

Emotional intelligence offers a strong path to lowering the negative impacts involved in being part of the military. Proactive attention and skill building is a more positive, more constructive way to support the emotional and psychological well being of our service men and women. It should receive greater attention and more application at all levels.

Emotional intelligence serves to enhance leadership, teamwork, and organizational development as well as individual performance. For the military, it is a type of training whose time has come.

Trauma is a subjective experience and differs from person to person. Each child in a family will react differently to the same experience and to trauma.
