Today I Will Get There

By: Ella Grace Phillips

“Mom!” I hollered from outside our hut. “I finished collecting the rainwater!” Slowly, I started working my way towards the hut.

“It’s about time to go to school now, isn't it?” My mom whispered.

“Right, I almost forgot.”

“Careful now dear,” my mom had a frightened look on her face, “that rainforest is a scary place.”

“Don't worry, I'll be careful.” I mentioned without a doubt.

With water in my right hand, and my school bag in the other, I started the path to school. I admire the nature around me. All of the beautiful animals and tall trees.

“It’s sad though,” I murmured to myself, “the trees are slowly dying and being torn down.”

“After all, that’s the only reason I take a three hour walk to school and leave mom at the hut alone.” My voice grew louder. “That’s the ONLY reason!” The words streaming out of my mouth as well as the tears out of my eyes echoed throughout the trees. “Why do humans have to be so cruel?” I said quieter this time falling to my knees.

I guess that my screams disturbed something because I heard growls from behind me. Slowly I started to turn around only to see a jaguar hidden in some bushes nearby. Not knowing what to do, I tip-toed into some nearby trees safe from the vicious creature.

“At this rate I’m never going to make it to school.” I repeated to myself.

Once again, I started off towards the academy. Just this time, I went at a faster pace.

With every step I took, I knew that I was closer to achieving my dream. It was so close that I could almost taste it… yet so far that it was out of my reach. One day, I will get there. One day, I will be able to save the trees. I mean, it's not like anyone else is… and if they are they're not making much of a difference. Don't people understand? Don't they understand that every dead tree is like another dead soul? Trees are alive too.

Once I could see the school, I sprinted as fast as my heart was pounding. Today, I am determined. Today, I will get there.
