So when thinking about a soldier standing
to attention, they have their hands down
by their sides and thier legs together.
When you think about women and how
women are brought up to carry themselves,
particularly in the states, or in the south,
a lot of women are told to ‘keep your
legs together’. This is seen to be how a
lady should sit. Another good example is
royalty, even Queen Elizabeth, it would be
hard to find any pictures of her with her
legs crossed higher than her calves, it’s
a little ankle cross, or you have the calf
cross, that’s it. Again, a sign formality and
respect.
If you think of people that are in powerful
positions, you have what’s called the figure
four, where you take one leg and you put
your ankle right up on your knee on the
opposite leg. So a lot of men will do this,
and also women too, Ellen Degneres and
Rachel Ray, both have this figure four
when sitting in their baseline. You have
your genetalia right where your legs meet,
if you go all the way up the legs you will
find yourself at the genital area. A lot of the
time men will do this to expose themselves,
not literally because they have clothes on,
but you have to be confident of yourself
if your going to open your legs, and what
better way for a man to show this off.
Blanca explains why the language of your
body is so important. No one wants to
be fooled; you want to know if someone
is levelling with you. Before you’re in a
relationship with someone, before you
start pouring out your heart and soul to
someone, you want to make sure that that
person is genuinely interested in you.
When starting business and negotiations,
lets say your talking to a potential client,
about a contract, but you’re noticing that
that person is shifting, and their feet are
moving towards the door, what is that
going to make you think? Non-verbal
communication is really important because
you want to establish and maintain genuine
relationships with other people. Business
and life is about people, unless you live
by yourself and you live away from the
outside world, it just doesn’t happen,
whether you’re in the grocery store, the
gas station, it just doesn’t happen, at school
or even with your family we are always
around people. We get more enjoyment
when relationships are more authentic.
When looking at the whole picture the
28
body can be best read, the whole package,
instead of just pointing one thing out.
Blanca does finish by telling me that the
feet are actually the most honest part of
your body. When you talk to people we
focus on the head, the face, we really don’t
look past the shoulders down on people,
but the feet can be a huge indication for
someone whether they are feeling good.
They’re either coming up on the balls of
there feet or their toes like they’re defying
gravity, or their legs may be crossed if
they’re not liking something, their feet
may start moving away from you. People
get so focused on what they say and not
what their body shows. When there’s a
difference in what somebody says versus
what they showing people should believe
what the body says.
