Seeding Weed- What makes weed a Weed

Ralph Waldo Emerson described a weed as a plant whose qualities has not yet been discovered. And when you pull a weed, it is a challenge to find something virtuous about them. Weeds tend to share some common attributes that contribute to their bad name— helping them survive under conditions where other plants couldn’ t. Here are just a few of the characteristics that make a weed a weed: 1. They sometimes produce tens of thousands of seeds per of thousands of seeds per plant.

2. Seeds can survive for a very long time. They can be dormant for a long time and start sprouting when conditions are just right. 3. They are able to establish themselves quickly. 4. They can reproduce vegetatively without seeds. 5. They can even grow in those areas which are inhospitable to other plants. The more of these weedy characteristics a plant has, the more successful and problematic a weed it will be. Dandelion is a colorful example one learns to identify at first. It is adapted to a wide range of environments and is found in almost all parts of world. Common lambsquarters, pigweed and common purslane are examples of weeds that are
