E.L.I.O.T. - ENHANCING LITERACY BASIC SKILLS AND FIGHTING DROPOUT WITH CROSS- CURRICULAR THEATRICAL EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING "IF I WERE A MEP" DOSSIER and Proposal template Topic Gender Equality Country United Kingdom Political group European People’s Party Subtopic description Gender Pay Gap Political position on topic The EPP wants genders to be equal including wages as many women don’t get as much money as men. As men and women have equal rights and this should be reflected in all policies. Proposal description EU law dictates that “ Each Member State shall ensure that the principle of equal pay for male and female workers for equal work or work of equal value is applied.” But this is not the case in practice. There are considerable differences between EU countries, with the gender pay gap ranging from less than 10% in Slovenia, Malta, Poland, Italy, Luxembourg and Romania, to more than 20% in Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria, reaching 30% in Estonia. We would like to make an addition to Article 157 and state that all countries must ensure that their gender pay gap is reduced to a maximum of 5% by the year 2022. Reference Law/Act Article 157 of the Treaty of the Functioning of European Union Equal pay for equal work is one of the European Union’s founding principles. In line with EU law, people who have suffered pay discrimination can take legal action without fear of retaliation from their employer Article 157 Each Member State shall ensure that the principle of equal pay for male and female workers for equal work or work of equal value is applied. http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:12012E/TXT Useful links https://ec.europa.eu/info/sites/info/files/ebs_465_infographic_gender_pay_gap.pdf https://ec.europa.eu/info/strategy/justice-and-fundamental- rights/discrimination/gender-equality/equal-pay/gender-pay-gap-situation- eu_en#factorsinfluencingthepaygap
