2nd lesson:
Selecting the idioms and research about them (in the computer room)
Introduction (5 minutes)
The teacher asks students to share the sentences they wrote with the
person sitting next to them and to peer correct them.
The teacher circulates as students work and checks whether the class
understood the concept of idiom.
Development (40 minutes)
The teacher presents the class with a new list of idioms and tells them that
they are going to look for the meaning of the new idioms in online
dictionaries (Cambridge, Oxford, Merriman Webster). Students will work
in pairs. First, every pair has to write down in a file the meaning of two
idioms (which they chose picking one of the folded pieces of paper hiding
a number corresponding to one of the idioms prepared by the teacher).
Then, the pairs will explain the meaning of their idioms to the class.
Once the meaning is clear for everybody, the class, the pairs will have to
make up a very short dialogue (2 to 3 lines) using the idioms they
searched.
The teacher circulates and check as students work.
The pairs act their short dialogues in front of the class.
Final (5 minutes)
The class vote the dialogue they liked the best.

Introduction (5 minutes)

The teacher tells the students that a ballot will be held. They will ballot 10
idioms out of those met in the 1 st and in the 2 nd lesson. Those they liked
the best.
Development (40 minutes)
The students will tick ten idioms in the list provided by the teacher.
The students will put their voting slips in the ballot box. The teacher will
read the results.
Once the result of the ballot will be known, the students break down in
small groups of three, and each group will work on 2 idioms. The groups
are asked to search the internet for an image to illustrate their idioms, to
find the Italian equivalent (if any) or to propose a translation into Italian,
and to find (if any/if known) the origin of the Italian and English
idioms/sayings.
The outcomes of each group will be uploaded on a class shared padlet and
assessed by the teacher.
Final (5 minutes)
The teacher elicits once again from the students the fact that idioms are
culturally bound and brainstorms the cultural elements emerging from the
selected idioms.
The teacher asks the students to start thinking of a story featuring as many
idioms as possible and to look for and bring to school any props/costumes
and/or make-up to act out scenes featuring idioms.
