There are few things that bring comfort on a chilly winter's evening like the flavor of warm, freshly made applesauce. It's easier to make than most people realize. I prefer my applesauce to be a bit chunky and with a hint of cardomon, but I've included a few other options.
4 medium cooking apples (granny smiths are a good choice)
1/2 cup water
Cut apples into slices, place in sauce pan and add water. Heat water and apples to a boiling over medium heat. Simmer uncovered, stirring occassionally, until tender (5 to 10 minutes). Use a potato masher, blender or hand blender to puree - be careful not to burn yourself.
Add one of these delicous options to warm applesauce before serving:
- cardomon
- cinnamon
- nutmeg
- dried cranberries
- dried cherries
- coconut flakes
