This time of the year families and friends gather around a dining room table, celebrate the holidays and consume a lot of turkey.

Here's a few cooking safety tips for the many individuals serving turkey this year:

-It is important to keep the meal preparation area clean.

-Follow package directions when thawing the tom or hen.

-Wash hands often to prevent transferring bacteria from the poultry to other items in the kitchen.

-Follow cooking instructions.

-Check the internal temperature of the turkey in the innermost part of the thigh and thickest part of the breast with a food thermometer - even if your turkey has a "pop-up" temperature indicator.

-Minimum internal temperature should reach 165 °F or higher for safety.
