Electronic Sound June 2015 (Club Edition) | Page 3
HELLO
welcome
to the
Electronic Sound
music club
Going from a quarterly to a monthly magazine has certainly
changed things in the Electronic Sound office. Gone are the days
of what now seems like a leisurely schedule. In fact, we have
taken delivery of the midnight oil. A large box. But a few late
nights is a small price to pay because being monthly means we
can cover more fine music, more often.
This month’s cover star is Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore, who
spoke to us from his home in Santa Barbara about his new solo
album. And a mighty fine record it is too. Back on our side of
the pond and also back in time a few decades, we arrive in late
1970s Sheffield to tell the remarkable story of Vice Versa, the
experimental electronic outfit who donned the gold lame to
become chartbusters ABC.
As always, we’ve got our share of 21st century names as well.
We visit Salford, where Gnod show us round Islington Mill, an
old cotton mill which is at the epicentre of a new Manchesterish scene. We chat to Walls and try to work out if they mean it
when they say they’re calling it a day once the dust has settled on
their new record. We also meet Benjamin John Power, the Fuck
Button fella whose latest release as Blanck Mass is one of the best
albums of the year so far, to talk life, the universe and everything
with us. Well, not everything, that would just be daft.
As we were preparing this musical feast, we discovered that our
leap into monthly publishing coincided with the 20th anniversary
of the first-ever issue of Muzik magazine, where several members
of the Electronic Sound team learned their trade. It’s funny how
things work out. You can read the story of Muzik in our special
Time Machine feature. It should at least explain some of the
reasons why Electronic Sound is the way it is.
Electronically yours
