Cargo drones are set to be the next big thing in the ‘ things that fly through the air ’ space , after investment of more than $ 5bn in the sector over the past couple of years . There have been over 170 air taxis , cargo and vertical take-off or landing craft launched by 130 different companies in that time , and cargo drones are set to really take off (!) over the coming years . Why ? Because , as with any good business idea , it solves a problem around ‘ last mile delivery ’. So , the next time you need a part quickly , you better look to the skies !
ON THE BUSES
Back to terra firma , and in NSW the government has ordered $ 70m worth of electric buses from a Western Sydney manufacturer . As we cover elsewhere in this issue , Covid has shone a harsh light on supply chains and the lack of manufacturing here in Australia , and the order for the 79 buses is another step to delivering on a commitment to have the state ’ s 8000 strong fleet electric by 2030 . At least they ’ ll be easier to return than the Spanish-made light rail trains …

Regular readers will know how fond we are of the gadgets that emerge from the Las Vegas Customer Electronic Show each year – and when it comes to everything from the wonderful to the ‘ what the hell were they thinking ?’, this year ’ s show , naturally , had it all . From wearable cameras to nailable solar panels , smart contact lenses to motorised , well , everything , the show kept the gadgets coming over the course of the event . Of interest to the average tradie , however , was the Chevy 2024 EV Pick Up ( ute , to you and me ) which has a whopping range of almost 650km . Just watch where you park it .
