THE CABLE GUY TECH GUIDE

What is the difference between low fire hazard and fire-resistant cables ?
Low fire hazard cables are manufactured with special low smoke , halogen free materials that limit the amount of toxic materials that are emitted during a fire situation . Furthermore , the cables have reduced fire propagation properties to ensure that the cables do not contribute to the spread of fire . They are often referred to as low smoke , zero halogen ( LSZH ) or halogen free , flame retardant ( HFFR ). The Nexans Olex Envirolex ® range of low fire hazard cables have been designed with safety in mind whilst also being easy to install , featuring flexible conductors in large sizes , and having more flexible sheath materials that are intended to make installation easier . Being PVC Free , the smoke emitted during combustion is minimised , and the smoke that is emitted is much lower in corrosive and dangerous gases .
Fire-resistant cables are designed with the same low smoke and reduced propagation properties as low fire hazard cables , but additionally will continue to operate in a fire for a limited period to maintain essential services ( emergency lighting , ventilation etc ) until the evacuation process is complete . The Nexans Olex Alsecure ® PLUS range features a mineral tape layer that will ensure circuit integrity , even when temperatures surrounding the cable system reach upwards of 1000C . Alsecure ® PLUS cables meet the WS52W fire resistance and mechanical requirements of AS / NZS 3013 and have Red List Free Declare status by the International Living Future Institute™ .
Our Envirolex ® and Alsecure ® PLUS range participate in Declare , with the top Red List Free status . The International Living Future Institute™ manages the Declare program to ensure specifiers can make a healthy product choice for any green building or high traffic building project .
