San Francisco-based start-up Nano Diamond Battery has created a radioactive diamond battery that can last for 28,000 years . From pacemakers to space vehicles , long-lasting batteries are very much needed but with a 28,000 year lifespan , these batteries may be taking it a little bit too far . More to the point , who are you going to complain to if the battery only makes it to 25,000 years ?
QUEENSLAND SAYS HI TO HYDROGEN
The Queensland city of Gladstone is to be home to a new , large-scale renewable hydrogen plan , while it ’ s also been singled out as one of seven regions in line for $ 464m in grants to get the hydrogen industry motoring in Australia . Sites at Bell Bay , Tasmania , the Hunter Valley , NSW , the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia , La Trobe Valley in Victoria and Pilbara in Western Australia are all in line to receive grants too . They will complement a number of hydrogen schemes already up and running that will contribute to the country ’ s burgeoning hydrogen industry that is expected to create 8000 jobs and generate $ 11bn per year by 2050 .

In 2006 , in the village of Yobe Nkosi , in northern Malawi , South Africa , 23-year-old villager Colrerd Nkosi returned home unable to live without the electricity he ’ d become accustomed to in Mzimba , 40km away . And so , reports Africa News , he set about powering his village . A stream nearby had enough force to pedal his bike , and the self-taught electrician created a makeshift dynamo to power his home . From there , word got around – and power was in demand . He turned an old fridge compressor into a water-powered turbine , while today a bigger turbine – built from the motor of a disused maize sheller – powers the whole village . Remarkable .
