MITSUBISHI’S FAMOUS UTE GETS A SPRUCE-UP

or 41 years, Mitsubishi’s flagship
work beast has been a fixture on
building sites and in sports bar car
parks across the nation. To ensure it stays that
way, the Japanese company’s boffins have
given the Triton its first makeover since 2015.
Apart from the ballsy new front end with
its fierce looking grille and lashings of
chrome, the main focus of the upgrade is on
safety. And with the Triton doubling as a
family mover and weekend warrior wagon
for many tradies, it’s a smart ploy.
MITEC is Mitsubishi’s internal car brain,
which delivers warnings and prompts on
everything from blind spots and lane
changing to emergency braking and rear
traffic, so you and your loved ones can get
from A to B in one piece.
In the grunt department, a 2.4-litre
turbodiesel engine pumps out 133kW and
430 Nm of torque for a gutsy ride on both city
and country bitumen. The gas guzzling stats
are also impressive at a miserly 8.6L/100km,
and tub dimensions – 1520mm by 1470mm
– make hauling tools and equipment a cinch.
Entry level for the double cab is $36,990, so
even apprentices can ( just about) afford to
splash out on one. It’s sure worth the dough.
