BRILLIANT SAVINGS
E-Matic’s lighting survey app helped Rushfileds Nursery identify major energy savings,
simply by switching to the company’s latest LED retrofit products.

Surprising savings
educing energy
consumption is an
increasing priority for
all businesses and
energy managers
are always looking
to identify energy
saving opportunities.
E-Matic, with its commitment to developing
common sense, energy saving solutions,
can help.
E-Matic offers a range of LED retrofit
lighting products designed to offer
functionality, ease of use and style.
Its latest technologies also provide
sophisticated lighting control options.
To help energy managers understand
the opportunities on offer, E-Matic has
developed an online lighting survey app.
This easy to use tool can estimate return
on investment or payback periods and
the potential CO2 and energy savings
that can be achieved by switching to an
E-Matic installation.
Glass construction
At the heart of any installation are
E-Matic’s LED tubes, which feature a full
glass design for minimal aesthetic change
from existing fluorescent tubes. The glass
construction also acts as a heat sink,
so the traditional aluminium base isn’t
required, increasing the angle of coverage
to 270 degrees. Furthermore, because
glass tubes are rigid, they don’t suffer from
‘sagging,’ which can occur with longer
plastic tubes.
A variety of lengths are available, all of
which can be used in switch start fittings
without rewiring, simply by removing the
existing starter and replacing with the
bridging unit supplied.
Maintaining light output
A full glass design
minimises the
aesthetic impact
of changing
from existing
fluorescent tubes.
One company to take advantage of these
benefits is Rushfields Nursery, which
switched to E-Matic retrofit lighting in
February of this year. The company decided
to switch following advice from Mike Butcher,
account manager at CEF Brighton West.
As nursery owner, Colin Longridge,
explained, he was interested in the concept
of energy saving lighting, but was worried
he would lose the light output that helped
products to be seen clearly. Colin was
assured that the E-Matic LED tubes would
not only give out excellent quality light, but
would also last for many years, reducing
maintenance or re-lamping costs.
To demonstrate the potential savings,
a lighting survey was carried out using
the E-Matic energy saving app. Having
calculated the number of tubes to be
replaced, Colin supplied pricing information
from his latest electricity bill, including
the price per kWh and climate change
levy (CCL) costs. They also calculated that
the lights in the shop and check out areas
were in operation for nine hours per day,
seven days per week, giving a total of 3,276
operating hours per year.
Using the app, it was demonstrated
that electricity consumption would drop
by very nearly 35 per cent. The cost of
electricity dropped from £4,351.80 down to
£2,830.46 and by year five, the total savings
added up to £3,929.09. The impact on the
environment was also substantial, with an
annual reduction in CO2 emissions, from
19.4 to 12.6 tonnes.
‘Some of the figures regarding
savings demonstrated were immediately
outstanding,’ said Colin. As a result,
Rushfields placed an order with CEF just
one week after taking the app survey.
Colin concluded: “As a business man,
of course I want to make savings and
where better to start than with energy
consumption, which reduces costs and
environmental impact. I am impressed with
the quality of light from the E-Matic LED
tubes and have already noticed that energy
consumption has fallen, which is very
pleasing indeed.’
