ON CALL STREETWISE
A leading Barchester Healthcare home has opted for C-Tec’s Quantec
addressable call system.
Located in the heart of Chichester, Marriott House and Lodge is set in a
village style community designed to promote independence within a safe and
caring environment.
Amida Fire, the Hertfordshire based life safety specialist, specified
Quantec to replace the existing conventional call system at the 55-bedroomed
facility. As the old system could not be disconnected until Quantec was
fully operational, the company’s engineers removed a zone at a time then
upgraded the devices in that area to ensure that no bedroom was without
emergency call facilities for more than two hours.
Said Daniel Wilson of Amida Fire, ‘Ensuring that the bedrooms were
operational at all times
was important to our
client and, therefore,
very important to us.
It was vital that we
ensured a seamless and
speedy transition so
numerous meetings took
place prior to installation
to ensure the project ran
smoothly.’ CiviTeq LED road lanterns
from Thorn Lighting
have been installed as
part of an extensive
replacement programme
to major road networks
undertaken by Thurrock
Council district, which
includes residential
estates, distributor roads
and major roundabouts.
The new lighting will address many of the previous issues of poor lighting resulting from the old style
SON/SOX luminaires, whilst maximising energy savings and reducing maintenance.
The project has seen the installation of over 13,000 of Thorn’s CiviTeq lanterns, which were chosen
through a tender evaluation process. Thurrock Council’s tender procedure had to meet rigorous
key criteria which included improved lighting levels with increased energy efficiency which, in turn
would improve whole life costs and the ability to save further energy by dimming in the future, which
was crucial. CiviTeq is a well proportioned LED road lantern with an unobtrusive style ideal for road
refurbishment lighting applications.
With 12 pr ecise lighting distributions, the lantern is fitted with R-Pec optic to provide safe and
efficient illumination. The fitting is compact and lightweight for easy handling and installation with
low windage. Available in two sizes, the fitting also has a comprehensive range of controls making it
suitable for a wide range of applications.

ECO ENTERPRISE
LED Eco Lights has announced that Bright Goods LED filament lamps are being installed throughout the
Fuller’s managed pub estate to reduce energy and maintenance costs. The project has been designed,
managed and delivered by the Light Corporation.
Bright Goods LED filament lamps from LED Eco Lights were first installed in The Sail Loft, a newly built
Fuller’s pub in Greenwich, in a lighting scheme created by the Light Corporation. The Sail Loft is part of the
new Greenwich Reach development, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows on three sides and a large terrace
facing the Thames with views of Canary Wharf, Cutty Sark and the O2 Arena. Its interior takes inspiration from
its location, and features nautical touches and maritime bric-a-brac adorning the walls.
Fuller’s was impressed with both the appearance of the lights and the energy efficiencies achieved, and
contracted The Light Corporation to survey a substantial part of its managed estate of just under 200 pubs, and
recommend low energy Bright Goods LED replacements for each light on the premises. Bright Goods LED lamps
are also being fitted into existing Fuller’s pubs as they are refurbished and to other new pubs as they are built.

A £60m expansion of a
Belfast boutique hotel is
being protected by a new
and upgraded fire safety
system that has Kentec’s
control panel technology
at its heart.
Phase 1 of Ten
Square Hotel Belfast’s
impressive 50-bedroom
extension was completed
in December 2016,
with work on the whole
project set to finish later
this year. This first phase
expansion has also added the new Linenhall Business Centre with conferencing, function rooms and
events space.
The hotel development’s second phase will see a 66-bedroom expansion on the other side of the
original hotel building into the former Scottish Amicable Building on Donegall Square to include a
spa and gym, and will bring the hotel’s bedroom capacity to over 140.
Specialised Fire & Security supplied and installed a new, networked fire safety system for the
new areas of the building whilst also upgrading the hotel’s existing fire system, which involved
replacing the existing control panel and integrating the old system into the new one.
Kentec’s Syncro series of fire control panels uses advanced microprocessor technology to
provide a control system of extremely high integrity. Syncro can be configured to suit all types
of system from the most simple to the highly complex. Fully integrated and secure, the network
provides an intelligent interface for building control.

THE RIGHT TRACK
NG Bailey has successfully completed the design, build and installation of a
new modulised central boiler plantroom that is at the heart of Transport for
London’s new Elizabeth Line train maintenance and stabling depot at Old
Oak Common Lane, North West London.
Taylor Woodrow is the main contractor and lead coordinator of the
building services design for the £142m depot, with NG Bailey responsible
for the circa £14m mechanical, electrical and plumbing services.
The new plantroom will be the heart of the building, integrated with the
renewable energy systems and distributing the energy generated by the
numerous eco systems.
It comprises six 24m 2 pre-
fabricated modules, that contain
the central boiler plant and
pipework interfacing with the
renewable energy systems. Due
to its streamlined prefabricated
design, the installation of the
modules took just two days
to install on site and was
completed in two weeks.
The whole scheme will
exceed the initial design target
of 20 per cent of the main
building’s energy requirements
coming from renewable sources,
with the hybrid scheme set to
deliver over 30 per cent of the
energy demand.
