SPECIAL FEATURE RENEWABLES & SUSTAINABILITY
Landlords need to consider a more robust heating system that can accommodate the habits of a changing tenant demographic .
Strategic planning
The private rented sector has the lowest proportion of homes with central heating ( 85 per cent ), and with more than two million homes in the UK with outdated storage heaters , over half a million of which are in the private rental sector , investment in the correct heating system can be the key to landlords improving their EPC rating . However , contractors must understand that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach .
Target your customers strategically , work with your manufacturer of choice and be aware of the changes afoot in the housing market , particularly the private rental sector . You might just find it is the key to unlocking business potential .
According to the government ’ s English Housing Survey 2014-15 , there has been a significant increase in the proportion of younger households and families with dependent children in the private rented sector – meaning more rooms in the house are being used at any one time .
This coupled with the fact that the private rented sector has the largest proportion of homes built before 1919 – making them more susceptible to damp , drafts and defects – makes single room
heating a less viable solution by itself . As a result , landlords need to consider a more robust heating system that can accommodate the habits of a changing tenant demographic . Those users who spend most of the day at home will always find it cheaper to have a combination of off-peak heaters with direct acting appliances . This means , for example , pairing the Q-Rad electric radiator with modern appliances like the Quantum offpeak system .
The Quantum System gives users the chance to use stored heat as and when they need it , throughout the day . The opportunity to tap into cheaper , lower carbon off-peak electricity means that there is an added benefit of lower energy costs for tenants . In fact , the Quantum is up to 47 per cent cheaper to run than an electric convector or radiator system and could give savings of up to £ 975 per year when compared to an electric radiatoronly system .
