PROJECT
FOCUS
IN THE LIGHT GARDEN
No London prime residential property is complete without a show-stopping garden. Russell Drury takes
a look at the work carried out by Design Plus Light for a rooftop terrace and garden in Kensington.

Design Plus Light
made full use of
outdoor space
for a prestigious
Kensington development to create both a
large multi-leveled garden and a rooftop
terrace. Stephen Woodhams designed the
concept for the space and Design Plus
Light lit the area.
Inspiration was taken from the interiors
designed by Joanna Wood, with a mix
of French classic design as well as a
contemporary fl avour to create a garden
that would look architecturally pleasing as
well as being a space that the whole family
could use and enjoy.

At night the garden
is completely
transformed with
subtle and cleverly
integrated lighting by
Design Plus Light.
Trellis columns were used to defi ne the
grid shaped lawn and travertine paving, while
clever use of planting further emphasises
the grid shaped pattern. Tumbled travertine
gives the garden a decidedly French feel
and makes it look slightly antique. Trellis
columns placed in pars with a linking
arch – arranged in three rows – make the
garden feel bigger and encourages any
visitor to wander through it. The end arch is
mirrored further emphasising depth.
Centre paving to the upper level has a child
friendly water feature: Nine colour changing
jets of water within the squares of cream
paving provide a playful focus. The rectangular
garden is divided into three spaces on two
tiers; lounging, dining and an activity area on
the upper level. A glass balustrade provides
almost uninterrupted views across from the
inside, yet ensuring safety at the same time.
