Thorn Lighting ’ s Altis and Mundial floodlights were installed at Leicester City FC to elevate the facility to Premier League standards prior to their title win that was described as the greatest sporting upset ever .
The lighting refurbishment work commenced before the club became champions of the Premier League as the club ’ s King Power Stadium had to meet the levels of vertical illuminance required for HDTV sport coverage .
Offering a unique combination of photometrics , 192 x 2KW Altis and 12 x 2W Mundial floodlights were installed by floodlighting specialist PWP Building Services , Nottingham , to provide 1,650 lux to main camera position with extremely low levels of flicker to allow for super slow motion viewing .
Altis is a high power floodlight for sports lighting applications that produces a unique quality of light suitable for HDTV broadcasting . Its flexible optical system optimises light distribution , whilst the compact dimensions and low weight of the fitting present minimal structural costs .
The excellent thermal management ensures consistency and stability of light over time and memory setting provides the ability to retain the floodlight setting after maintenance . Accurate aiming is achieved with an adjustable precision aiming device around the frame .

SSE has undertaken a project which resulted in a 40 per cent saving on the cost of lighting its Hampshire call centre , helping it deliver on a commitment to reduce overall energy consumption by 15 per cent over a five-year period .
The company ’ s call centre on Penner Road in Havant , Hampshire , houses approximately 2,000 employees . The scale of the call centre and its hours of operation , presented a challenge to light the workspace effectively and efficiently . SSE made it a priority to avoid light usage in unoccupied areas , such as hallways and storerooms , to cut back on unnecessary usage and costs .
SSE Enterprise Contracting worked in partnership Ex-Or to deliver a retrofit solution capable of adapting to the building ’ s changing requirements .
Ex-Or supplied lighting controls in its call centre space with a combination of wireless transmitters and MK Echo wireless receivers , along with stand alone passive infrared ( PIRs ) sensors to ensure artificial light is used only when absolutely necessary . In total 500 wireless receivers , 1,283 dimmer receivers and 115 stand alone PIR were installed in order to achieve the necessary lighting control for the vast space .

Ancient meets modern
Sir John Deane 6th Form college in Cheshire has switched to Gewiss Street [ 03 ] LED street lighting . Established in 1557 , the college welcomes 1500 students from across the region and provides A level provision in nearly 40 subjects .
The college needed to improve existing external lighting throughout the campus , particularly in car parks , bus stops and public walkways . The lighting was outdated and giving off poor light levels and this project provided the opportunity to switch from SON lamps to more energy efficient LED lighting .
After extensive research into sustainable LED street lighting with local electrical contractor Mike Thompson Electrical , the college approved the installation of 90 Gewiss Street [ O3 ] fittings on pre-existing lamp posts .
Colin Lupton , head of estates at Sir John Deane ’ s College , said , ‘ We are very satisfied with our new street lighting and in particular how quickly it was installed .’
The electrical contractor on this project , Mark Hassall from Mike Thompson Electrical said , ‘ We found Street [ O3 ] to be a high quality , well engineered solution . As well as its superior build quality and lighting levels , it was exceptionally simple and quick to install .’
