JUST DANDY
Aurora Lighting has carried out a complete front and back of house lighting retrofit for Gibbs & Dandy Luton , part of the Saint Gobain group , resulting in a reduced number of fittings and equipment , and increased annual energy savings of almost £ 20,000 .
For the lighting refit of its offices , retail , showroom , outdoor and warehousing space , Aurora proposed and implemented a new scheme that not only provided good working conditions across all areas of the estate but one that also reduced energy costs and provided a more comfortable and enjoyable customer experience .
Aurora carried out a full project design and specification assessment in October 2016 , with installation commencing in December and completion at the beginning of February 2017 .
During initial site visits , Aurora identified a number of issues with the existing design and products across most of the application areas . Observations included over design and high fitting numbers , low levels of illumination in industrial and retail areas as well as large spaces where light was unnecessarily on for long periods .
Following all observations and after presenting a report on the findings , Aurora produced a project proposal that would see energy savings significantly increased , resulting in a cost saving of £ 19,200 annually .

SHARED SUSTAINABILITY
The installation by Aimteq of wireless building energy management systems ( BEMS ) at Stagecoach has seen aggregate gas savings across 24 upgraded depots of 20.45 per cent based on regression , and 17.15 per cent based on year-on-year consumption data . Moreover , using the latest savings data , the investment is set to achieve a return of less than two years on a region by region basis .
In 2015 , Stagecoach launched a new sustainability strategy that included a plan to cut carbon emissions at its transport operations in the UK and North America . Produced in partnership with the Carbon Trust , the ‘ Shared Responsibility , Shared Future ’ strategy includes aims such as reducing the carbon emissions from buildings by seven per cent by April 2019 .
Within the UK Bus division , this target alone will demand a total capital expenditure of around £ 1.3 million . However , it is expected to deliver cumulative cost savings of £ 4.7 million by the time of its completion .
‘ BEMS is one of several initiatives that we are implementing to help meet our carbon reduction target in buildings within the UK Bus division ,’ stated Graham Whitelocks , director safety , health & environment at Stagecoach UK Bus . ‘ Previously , our depots relied on basic heating controls and we felt there were significant gains to be made by switching to wireless BEMS .’

BRIGHT IDEA
Increasing instances of lamp failure , a recognition that the quality of the illumination could be better , and a desire to take advantage of energy savings accruing from the latest LED technology informed a recent upgrade at Rugby High School in Warwickshire . The major , site wide overhaul was undertaken by Energys Group and funded by Utility Rentals ’ operational lease scheme .
Having engaged the services of energy efficiency technology specialist Energys Group to advise on the project , it quickly became clear that a comprehensive LED lighting upgrade would both reduce demand on supply and enable substantial energy savings . Consequently , the two parties began work on a lighting overhaul to encompass the main hall , music theatre , classrooms , science labs , gym , sports hall , corridors , staircases , communal areas and the languages block .
The resulting installation draws on LED products from across the Energys Group range , and includes tubes , panels , downlighters , spotlights , wall-lights , outdoor fittings and flood-lights . Mere weeks after the project was completed it was evident to school management and personnel quite how much of an improvement the new systems had delivered .
As a result of the massive upgrade , Energys predicts a return on investment of just 4.5 years . Annual energy savings are expected to total £ 12.5K and approximately 104,985kWh , with a reduction in CO2 emissions of 55.84 tonnes per year .

PIPING HOT
More than 10.6km of Pentair ’ s Raychem hot water ( HWAT ) maintenance systems and self-regulating cables have been installed as part of a large scale renovation project of 16 schools across Glasgow . Designed to provide continuous , energy efficient hot water temperature maintenance , without the need for a recirculation system , the installations aimed to maximise comfort and safety for both students and staff .
When considering the available hot water systems for the school renovations , there were strict requirements around the protection offered by the products , particularly in relation to minimising legionella risks by inhibiting bacterial growth . The chosen system also needed to provide an energy efficient solution that was easy to install and avoided an extensive network of pipes , as well as delivering an immediate water supply . The Raychem single-pipe HWAT solution from Pentair was selected to meet these needs .
By adjusting their power output to compensate for variations in water and ambient temperatures , the Raychem HWAT-R electric heat tracing cables replace supply pipe heat losses at the point where the loss occurs . The result is a solution that provides continuous , energy efficient hot water temperature maintenance , 50 per cent reduction in pipework compared with a conventional recirculation system and substantial energy as well as cost savings .

THAT ’ S A FIRST
Staff and pupils at Marchwood Junior School , near Southampton , are benefitting from the reliability and innovation of the new Soteria range from Apollo Fire Detectors in an installation which marks the range ’ s first educational application .
In 2016 , Southern Fire Alarms ( SFA ) was awarded the tender by Hampshire County Council ( HCC ) to specify and install a new fire detection system at the school . The old system was obsolete and non-compliant and was due for renewal as part of the HCC Schools ’ Refurbishment Programme . The school building contains many open areas with high ceilings and interconnected spaces , presenting challenges which the designer of the fire detection system needed to overcome .
The Soteria range was selected as its advanced technology significantly improves the detection of smoke , enhances the reliability of the detection process , and reduces the risk of false alarms .
A total of 90 Soteria devices were installed at the school , with a panel from Advanced . The installation had to be completed during term time when the building was occupied .
