TUNNEL VISION
Prysmian Group has been awarded a new contract – in consortium with Balfour Beatty – for the realisation of a new High Voltage Direct Current ( HVDC ) interconnector between France and the UK through the Channel Tunnel .
The project is one of the European Commission ’ s Projects of Common Interest and was awarded by ElecLink , a wholly owned subsidiary of Groupe Eurotunnel , that will build an interconnector through the Channel Tunnel to provide a power transmission link between the UK and France with a capacity of a 1,000MW in either direction of flow for a total project value for the consortium of approximately € 219 million . The share of Prysmian that will coordinate the design , supply , installation and commissioning of the interconnection is about € 79 million .
The ElecLink HVDC cable link will increase the energy exchange between France and the UK contributing to the integration of energy markets and enabling the diversification of energy sources . The ElecLink interconnector will provide cost effective additional power transmission capacity with minimal environmental impact through the interoperability of the Channel Tunnel , a low environmental impact project with no overhead lines and no undersea cables providing carbon reduction of 6.1m tonnes .

SEEING THE LIGHT
BEG has delivered an integrated lighting control strategy to a major UK electrical engineering company in Oxfordshire and helped it become energy efficient .
Darke & Taylor expanded its operations from leased premises in Langford Locks in Kidlington to a new , fully owned facility in Blenheim Office Park in Long Hanborough .
The company , which specialises in key construction market sectors including the private sector , the public sector , education and commercial office space , required a lighting control solution at the development which would reduce its operating costs . BEG carried out a lighting site survey before recommending a range of products to meet the different requirements of the individual rooms .
The manufacturer , which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year , provided a number of the master-type BEG Luxomat PD9-M-1C-FC occupancy sensors for the main office , favoured by many clients because the fact it is a small – the size of a £ 1 coin – and discreet recessed mounted sensor .
In the offices where Darke & Taylor ’ s designers work , BEG supplied the BEG Luxomat PD2-M-DALI / DSI-FC sensor . This detector is a master-type recessed DALI dimming sensor designed for daylight control of rooms where there are only minor movements . Luminaires are controlled and adjusted with daylight brightness .
Darke & Taylor also had the BEG Luxomat PD3N-1C-FC installed – this is a normal switchin sensor for fast traffic areas so was ideal for the lobby , stairs and bathroom areas in the new offices . BEG also supplied its IR-RC adaptor , which means all the sensors could be conveniently controlled by the Darke & Taylor facilities management team via the BEG smartphone App .

WAREHOUSE PROJECT
Aura Light has been involved in the replacement of a new warehouse lighting scheme at TNT in Croydon .
Aura Light ’ s PerseaLED luminaires were chosen to be installed at the site to reduce energy and improve working conditions . TNT ’ s preference to install luminaires with energy saving benefits also encouraged the decision to convert the lighting scheme to LED , where Aura Light offers improved and a sustainable lighting solution .
The PerseaLED luminaires served to provide a modern , energy efficient replacement for 400W high pressure sodium and metal halide high bay luminaires at the TNT warehouse .
Gareth Burge , operations manager at TNT Croydon , commented , ‘ As a depot , we have been requesting new lighting for some time and our previous lighting was dull in colour , making working conditions a potential health and safety hazard .’
‘ The installation of our replacement lighting was quick and the new lighting has shown a huge improvement in staff morale , particularly to those working night shifts . The automatic sensors of the Aura PerseaLEDs mean they automatically switch off when no movement is detected so making further energy savings in our warehouse .’
Gareth also stated that as a result of the new lighting , the quality of internal CCTV images has seen a dramatic improvement , making a significant difference in reducing health and safety risks , and in averting any security breaches in the depot .

HOLY LIGHT
Reggiani Lighting ’ s Yori and Envios LED projectors have been incorporated in a new lighting scheme for the chapel at the prestigious Corpus Christi College , Oxford , as part of a major refurbishment project .
In coordination with GBS Architect Oxford and dpa lighting , consultants designed and implemented the new lighting throughout the chapel to enhance the stunning architectural interior whilst ensuring that the new lighting allowed for all the appropriate scenes and flexibility required by a space which is used for a diverse range of functions .
The refurbishment of the chapel to provide a modern , energy efficient lighting scheme was purposely scheduled so as to coincide with the college ’ s quincentenary year celebrations in 2017 . The exacting brief from the college was created to ensure that the refurbishment of the 500 year old , Grade I listed chapel remained faithful to all the original architecture and finishes .
Reggiani ’ s Yori fittings with 13W LED source were supplied on track with 21 ° and 51 ° reflectors , mounted vertically into carved niches within the stone reveals of the adjacent windows each side of the altar . With three spotlights on each track , these were directed to illuminate the altar and the painting behind it , allowing it to be appreciated in a way in which it has not been seen for decades .

THE EV EXPERIENCE
Chargemaster has won the contract to set up and operate the EV Experience Centre , the UK ’ s first ever shopping centre multi-brand showroom . Milton Keynes was awarded £ 9m Go Ultra Low Cities funding in January 2016 to encourage the uptake of low emission vehicles and hit the target of 23 per cent of all car sales being electric or plug-in by 2021 .
The project is due to launch in spring 2017 and will be situated within the city ’ s premier shopping centre .
The new project will help residents understand the true potential of EV ownership . As well as showcasing the latest EVs and exciting technology , highly trained independent professionals will be on hand to answer visitors ’ questions and refer them to relevant local dealerships or partner leasing companies . As an added bonus , Milton Keynes residents and businesses will also be able to test drive a range of vehicles on a short or long term basis .
The introduction of free parking for ultra low emission vehicles , as well as trialling the latest developments in technology such as inductive charging are among other innovative projects to boost EV uptake .

STADIUM NOT ALIGHT
Geofire ’ s Salamander radio controlled fire door closers are proving to be a success at the home of Premier League football club Sunderland AFC . The wire free system was installed at the Stadium of Light to ease access throughout the ground , protecting the building and its inhabitants , should a fire occur .
In the event of a fire alarm , the doors in the stadium will close on receipt of a radio signal from a mains powered controller unit , which is easily connected to the existing fire alarm system .
With space for 49,000 spectators , the Stadium of Light has the sixth largest capacity of any English football stadium . Holding open fire doors at the club is essential for creating restriction free movement around the building in line with the Disability Discrimination Act , improving ventilation and ensuring the safety of match goers and employees during busy periods .
One controller unit can manage up to 99 fire door closers or fire door holders ; a Salamander booster is also available and can extend the range of an installation by up to 50m .
