EN ROUTE
Spie UK has been commissioned to modernise and divert the 50 year old YG 275kV route . The £ 3.5m contract has been awarded by SP Energy Networks ( SPEN ).
The YG overhead line route , constructed in 1967 , is the main interconnection between Longannet and Kincardine Substations . Made up of 17 towers , its approximate route length is 4.3km with a circuit length of 8.6km .
Work on the route commenced in December 2016 and is scheduled to finish at the end of March 2017 . A 1km diversion is required to facilitate the construction of a new housing development to the south east of Kincardine .
The operation involves the construction of three new towers , including ground investigation at each location , and the removal of three existing towers . Spie will be responsible for repairing and painting existing structures , renewing tower furniture , including anticlimbing devices and installing tower top number plates for helicopter inspection .
Other engineering responsibilities assigned to Spie include replacing earth wire with an OPGW equivalent under single circuit outage conditions . After replacing downleads , insulators and fittings at terminal structures it will then complete testing and commissioning on the sections of removed conductors .
Once core project works have been completed , Spie will ensure post-contract landscaping is completed along affected roads . Spie ’ s engineers will establish fibre optic connections into Longannet and Kincardine Substations .

WATER WORKS
Southern Water has cut the maintenance of a low lift pump and improved its reliability following the installation of an ABB synchronous reluctance motor ( SynRM ) and variable speed drive ( VSD ) package .
The pump is sited at Hardham Water Supply Works ( HWSW ), which provides water to more than 450,000 customers in the north of West Sussex . It extracts an average of 25 million litres of water per day from the local river .
Southern Water needed to replace the pump motor and control system , which were becoming obsolete and increasingly unreliable . Installed for over 30 years , spare parts such as contactors and control cards in the main panel were becoming difficult to source and maintain .
The existing 75kW DC motor required maintenance to its brushes every three months and a recent failure had made it critical to find a more reliable solution . A major consideration for Southern Water was cutting operational and downtime costs as part of the total expenditure ( TOTEX ) approach adopted by Ofwat ’ s latest Asset Management Period , AMP 6 .
Southern Water contacted ABB authorised value provider MKE , which recommended the ABB SynRM and drive package . The SynRM uses the magnetic principle of reluctance , eliminating rotor cage losses and increasing efficiency , all within a smaller motor frame size .
As well as improved reliability , the ABB drive is also expected to produce a four per cent increase in motor efficiency , further cutting operating costs .

SOUND THE ALARM
Cartrefi Conwy , a Registered Social Landlord ( RSL ) in Conwy , North Wales , has announced its decision to fit Aico ’ s mains powered multi-sensor fire alarm , Ei2110e as standard across its entire housing stock .
A long standing Aico customer of over 10 years , Cartrefi Conwy had been using Aico Ei160RC alarms , but has upgraded the specification to the premium multisensor fire alarm , Ei2110e .
The Ei2110e contains two sensor types , optical and heat , to constantly monitor smoke and heat levels , sending and receiving information via its intelligent detection software . This sensor information alters the alarm ’ s sensitivity and trigger points , automatically providing the best response to all fire types and reduces potential false alarms .
Cartrefi Conwy will be installing the Ei2110e to a minimum category of LD3 , which requires alarms in all circulation spaces that form part of the escape routes from the premises . For its sheltered flats , it will increase the coverage to category LD2 , which sees the addition of alarms in all rooms that present a high risk of fire to occupants .
The alarms will be fitted during planned installation programmes and also reactively as required . In addition , they will be fitted as standard in Cartrefi Conwy ’ s new build development programme .
