I am now a junior in high school and feel like my grades still define who I am in my parent's eyes. Students see the flaws in our society, yet adults don’t do anything about it. We are intelligent enough to understand the world around us, so why? Why are we seen as nothing but a grade?

My way of viewing the world has changed, because I now know this is a problem. I fear going to school because I will only be seen as a grade by my parents. School can be fun when we learn new things, and I really do love learning. Grades are the problem, because they become our label. I feel as though my stomach turns into a knot with anxiety when grades are mentioned because instead of encouraging me to do better, I fear I can only do worse. I fear being viewed on how well I do when compared to other students. This makes me feel like I won’t do good enough in school or in the future.

It took me a while to realize that grades do not define me. I define me. I am James. I enjoy reading and have a talent for poetry.

You are not your grade. The system does not define who you are. You define yourself, so don’t allow your grades, school, or your parents to make you feel like a failure.

With an Electric Perspective, I am James Gomez.

How am I supposed to be willing to become better within the confines of school if I am constantly seen as my grades, and not myself?
