Aŋunialgułiq All of the traditional skills and values necessary for a hunter to be successful are still necessary today as well as new skills needed to be successful in the new modern job environment. All Iñupiat must now be taught the skills and values needed to successfully survive and provide for their families. In the old days only men were taught to be the providers. Today and in the future, this responsibility must be met by both men and women and often shared. Knowing Iñupiaq life ways, values and knowledge are more important than ever. Knowing modern job skills and their necessary educational background is just as important. We truly walk in two worlds, hopefully with a strong Iñupiaq spirit. y y No matter how hard it is, Elders must encourage children to continue life-long learning in schools just as they must learn how to live as Iñupiaq on our lands. y y Advise children to respect the land they live on, and the animals they harvest. y y Teach children and grandchildren survival skills y y Teach children through hands-on experience. Take them out to harvest seasonal foods and teach them to help others. y y Organize and help out in women or men’s club so they can help teach children. y y Teach the proper use and management of money. y y Teach honesty and integrity so they may be respected providers and leaders. y y Participate in Iñupiaq Days and other school activities in order to teach survival skills and values.
