A good sense of humor is an important part of Iñupiaq life. Our ancestors knew the
importance of humor to good health and healing. Good-natured teasing and joking kept all
happy. Humor was used to teach and correct others, especially children, without making
them feel put down. Clowning was used in story, song and dance to entertain. Care must
be taken so that humor is never used to put someone down or to be vicious.
y y Parents and elders should pass on funny, humorous stories and
experiences.
y y Elders should explain to younger people the importance of
humor in our lives.
y y Children should know the traditional role of teasing cousins.
