Savvaqtułiq In the old days, we could not survive if anyone was not working hard. Today we must continue to be known as hard workers in order to feel better about ourselves, be employed, and be successful in harvesting our traditional resources. Hard work produces a well conditioned body and healthy mind. y y Elders must teach harvesting, preserving, and preparing seasonal foods in order for our children to preserve our culture and traditions, enjoy our food and respect our lands. y y Teach women and children how to prepare and sew animal hides into clothing because our weather is still cold and we need superior clothing to stay warm. Learning these traditions also helps to teaching artistic skills. y y Teach children and grandchildren survival skills so they may enjoy our lands and live. y y Teach children through hands-on experience. Take them out to harvest seasonal foods and teach them to help others. y y Teach children plant names and how to use and preserve them. y y Tell children and grandchildren stories of survival that our people went through and tell them what hard work they did so that the children can appreciate how easy they have it today. y y Encourage children to participate in Iñupiaq games of skill and western sports. y y Encourage those who are working to remain employed. y y Encourage young people to get an education or training. y y Encourage children to get educated in both worlds. 15 IÑUPIAT ILITQUSIAT IÑUPIAT ILITQUSIAT 16
