Elders' Advice 2 | Page 18

Kamaksrił.iq Utuqqanaanik Elders traditionally have been respected because they survived such a hard life as people of the Arctic. They are also respected for the knowledge that was passed down to them by their ancestors, for their commitment to teaching others the Iñupiaq language, traditions and culture and for the wisdom they have gained from life experiences. They were advised by others as children and their role is to advise others. They are willing to put aside personal feelings and beliefs for the betterment of their people and tribe. Elders are our spiritual leaders. y y Elders should be asked for advice by every organization in the village. y y Each Village Elders Council will designate an elder representative for each organization. y y Elders should speak about the roles of past elders. y y Since many Elders are physically feeble, others must be taught to help them. y y People should not expect pay when helping elders. y y Advise children not to talk back to elders and parents as they are trying to help. y y Elders must show and teach respect in families. 13 IÑUPIAT ILITQUSIAT IÑUPIAT ILITQUSIAT 14
