Reporting the Truth When it Hurts
I went to high school in
Riverside but grew up all over
Orange County. This gave me
a more in-depth perspective
of the different minds that
make up Southern California.
I remember passing by
Santa Ana College every
day and not giving it much
thought. Now that I attend
this institution, I’m glad that I
made that decision.
Since becoming a news
writer for the el Don, I have
found my purpose. I feel
empowered to cover topics
that are important for all
students, whether it be
the struggles of removing
placement testing for
English and Math courses
or the college’s first top twin
student-athletes.
Sometimes this means
reporting uncomfortable
truths, like when a faculty
member was arrested for
lewd acts on a Middle College
High School student or when
a survey revealed that a
majority of our students are
food insecure.
People deserve to know
what the school won’t tell
them. If there are injustices or
problems on campus, it’s our
duty as journalists to do what
the law allows and speak truth
to power, helping those who
feel voiceless.
Here at el Don, we strive to
uphold that right for every
single individual, student or
faculty member, even if those
in power believe they are
above the law.

matters.
